Horse of Hope was painted five years after the devastating accident that changed our lives forever.
Before the accident, my son Bryan had just decided to become a missionary.
He was twenty two years old.
We didn’t have much money,
and I hadn't picked up a paintbrush in nearly thirty years.
But I had a plan: I was going to start painting again to help fund his missions.
Three days after his passport arrived,
he was hit by two cars, dragged through an intersection,
and left with a catastrophic traumatic brain injury.
😭
Instead of painting to send him into the world,
his bedroom became his mission field, and I became his full-time caregiver.
One day, while sitting by his bedside, out of nowhere,
I felt completely compelled to paint something for Bryan that would bring hope
and kind of be a break from the emotional pain. A focus forward. Hope!
I had no idea what I was going to create,
but I started painting a horse—an animal of comfort and majestic strength.
And Bryan really loves horses!
The strength in these brushstrokes were from deep within my heart
where God touched the broken places.
It was fought for right by Bryan’s bed.
🙏
It was a painful battle actually—that led to that decision,
but something holy raised up in my heart that enough was enough.
To just let go of the pain. We were not going to embrace that.
We were going to embrace Hope. And God made that real!
Today, the original canvas still hangs by Bryan’s bedside where he can see it every day.
It is our reminder that even when our plans are completely shattered,
God is still writing our story.
If you would like to understand more of the journey behind this painting,
Bryan's full story is shared on my About page below.
If this piece speaks comfort into your own hardships,
and I pray it does, fine art prints and gifts are available.
